The claim

On the Q3 2026 earnings call (October 21, 2026) Musk said early production has started on a high-volume Optimus line in Fremont designed for 20,000 units a week, that reaching that rate will take “probably at least a year, maybe a little longer,” and that Optimus deliveries to companies outside Tesla are expected around the end of 2027. The AI5 chip goes into Optimus around April 2027. The shareholder letter called the Fremont units “the first production-quality bots that we have manufactured.”

Caveats baked in at the time

  • Musk called the ramp a “shallow slope” that is “somewhat bumpy,” and named the hand, especially the fingers, as the hardest electromechanical problem. No unit-cost target was given.
  • “Around the end of 2027” is the fourth external-sales date Optimus has carried; earlier targets (external sales in 2026, several thousand units built in 2025) were not met. This entry tracks only the current one.
  • Tesla has said it needs 10,000 to 20,000 robots inside its own factories first, for training data. Internal use does not count here.

What counts as met

An Optimus unit delivered to a customer that is not Tesla, SpaceX, xAI, or another Musk company, confirmed by Tesla or by the customer. Demo units at events, leased showpieces, and units inside Tesla plants do not count.

Status as of Saturday, October 31, 2026

Early production in Fremont, no external deliveries. On October 30 a conference organizer told The San Francisco Standard that Tesla would open Optimus reservations around his December 1–2 event; Musk replied “No” on X, and Tesla did not comment. Treated here as a report, denied.

Read against the call transcript and the shareholder letter. The December reservation story rests on one third party's account and a one-word denial; neither changes the end-of-2027 date.

What would move it

  • Tesla shareholder letters and calls: a first named external customer, or a slip in the “end of 2027” language
  • Tesla job postings for Optimus field service, deployment, or customer support
  • FCC equipment authorizations for Optimus radios
  • Any reservation page on tesla.com
  • Musk posts that put a quarter on external deliveries
